About the Golden Artists Project

The Golden Artists Project is a CASS Care community arts initiative that empowers older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to express themselves through creativity. By providing opportunities to paint, learn new creative skills, exhibit artwork and connect with others, the program promotes active ageing, celebrates cultural diversity and helps reduce social isolation.

About CASS Care

Established in 2002, CASS Care is a not-for-profit registered charity and an endorsed public benevolent institution (PBI), providing a comprehensive range of community and social services across Metropolitan Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne for multicultural communities.

Each week, over 8,500 families engage with our activities and services, supported by 850 employees and more than 450 dedicated volunteers across CASS Group.

We proudly celebrated the success of our co-design workshops with R U OK? at the media launch, highlighting the expansion of multicultural mental wellbeing resources through bilingual, bicultural community efforts.

Held on 25 June, the media launch celebrated the outcomes of the mental health resources we co-designed with R U OK? through four workshops held between November 2025 to March 2026.

Conversation Starter Poster in Traditional Chinese

The resources, including conversation starter posters and the message “你不是一个人面对, 你还好吗 (You are not alone, R U OK?)”, were designed and refined through discussions and engagement with members of the Chinese community members that we facilitated. The in-language and culturally responsive messages encourage Chinese community to stay connected and engage in conversations that can support others through tough times.

Following the launch of CASS H-Line Non-Crisis Hotline in 2021, this partnership represents another initiative supporting the mental wellbeing of the Chinese community. We aim to raise awareness and encourage early help-seeking among members of the Chinese community through this partnership with R U OK?, a not-for-profit organisation promoting mental health awareness and education within the community.

On 13 June 2026, more than 600 distinguished guests and key stakeholders from across the governmental, corporate, and community sectors gathered at the Rhodes Phoenix Restaurant for the CASS 45th Anniversary Charity Dinner 2026. Presented under the theme “Empowering Seniors, Enriching Communities,” the event raised additional funds and resources to enhance the CASS Volunteering Model and amplify the transformative impact of volunteering across the broader community.

 The evening highlighted the CASS Volunteering Model as a sustainable approach to reducing social isolation while recognising the strengths, contributions and resilience of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) ageing communities.

Prof Stephen Li AM, Chairperson of CASS, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to advancing CALD aged care and highlighted the growing recognition of the CASS Volunteering Model in research and publications, including the renowned Journal of Sociology and the National Strategy for Volunteering.

This commitment was further illustrated through a video showcasing CASS’s 45th anniversary, the CASS Volunteering Model and its fundraising initiatives. By expanding volunteering opportunities for CALD seniors, these initiatives create a ripple effect of positive change, empowering older people to become active community leaders and helping to build stronger, more connected multicultural communities.

The event also featured the official launch of CASS’s newly revamped website, unveiling a multilingual digital platform designed to improve accessibility and foster deeper, more timely community connections.

The Hon Stephen Kamper MP, Minister for Multiculturalism, conveyed his support through Mr Jason Li MP, State Member for Strathfield, who delivered remarks on his behalf and applauded CASS’s longstanding contributions to multicultural communities. Representing Ms Kellie Sloane MP, Leader of the Opposition in New South Wales, Mr Matt Cross MP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary and State Member for Davidson, also addressed the audience and expressed strong support for the organisation’s ongoing work.

Other governmental representatives included the Hon Sophie Cotsis MP, Minister for Industrial Relations, Minister for Work Health and Safety, and State Member for Canterbury, and the Hon Damien Tudehope MLC, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. Both participated in the evening’s prizes presentation, contributing to the celebratory moment.

The fundraising auction, led by Clr Nancy Liu of Georges River Council and Mr Ivan Wong, Vice-Chairperson of CASS, drew enthusiastic participation and generous support from guests.

In addition to the raffle draw, OSIM Australia sponsored a special lucky draw, with a massage chair valued at over $8,900 awarded to a CASS Support at Home Program client who accumulates 100 service hours between December 2025 and May 2026. The prize promotes seniors’ wellbeing and daily comfort.

The evening was marked by a strong spirit of community and shared purpose, bringing together leaders, corporate partners and supporters to celebrate the ongoing achievements and reaffirm their collective commitment to advancing services that support and strengthen multicultural communities.

Revealed “60% of People Aged 50+ Feel Lonely, especially CALD Seniors”

[26 May 2026, Sydney] CASS, a leading multicultural community services provider, announced at a press conference held on Tuesday, 26 May, the holding of its upcoming 45^th Anniversary Charity Dinner, themed “Empowering Seniors, Enriching Communities”, at Sunny Seafood Central Park Mall. CASS Board Members, senior staff members, and representatives of the event sponsors attended the occasion.

Speaking at the opening, CASS Chairperson, Prof. Stephen Li AM, said,

“As Australia’s population continues to age, senior loneliness and social isolation have become increasingly pressing social issues. Research found that 50% of people aged 50 and above experience social isolation, 60% report feeling lonely, and 25% experience severe loneliness¹. Among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) seniors, the situation is even more pronounced.”

 

“At CASS, we have been working closely with universities and research partners to better understand the lived experiences of the CALD ageing communities that we serve. We recognise the strength of our communities and are building on the strong engagement in informal volunteering among Australians born in non-English-speaking countries, as identified by Volunteering Australia.”

 

Prof. Li continued,“In seeking sustainable solutions for CALD’s ageing communities, CASS has been actively developing and refining its Volunteering Model since 2022. It has further been studied by Professor Bingqin Li from the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales.”

Professor Bingqin Li was invited to elaborate on the model, saying,

“The defining feature of the CASS Volunteering Model is assisted self-governance, a practical and culturally responsive approach through which volunteering becomes both community-led and institutionally supported. It demonstrates how inclusion can be fostered through relational and culturally grounded forms of organisation.”

The CASS Volunteering Model has proven to be an effective approach to empowering older adults and responding to multicultural community needs. It demonstrates how older migrants can transition from passive service recipients to active community leaders. The innovative model has gained recognition in several academic publications and has also been acknowledged in the National Strategy for Volunteering.

The CASS 45^th Anniversary Charity Dinner 2026, themed “Empowering Seniors, Enriching Communities,” aims to raise funds to enhance the CASS Volunteering Model and expand volunteer services for the wider community.  It will be held on Saturday, 13 June at Rhodes Phoenix Restaurant at 6:30 pm.
